Weekly Movie Review: Moulin Rouge
61Moulin Rouge
A young English writer (Ewan McGregor) moves to Paris to find inspiration. While there, he falls in love with Satine, a courtisane (Nicole Kidman). Their romance is over-shadowed by the evil Duke (Richard Roxburgh) who wants Satine for himself.
Genre: drama, romance, musical
Trailer
Pros
- Nicole Kidman still looked good
- Ewan McGregor is good
- The choice of songs is good
Cons
- The first 20 minutes are messy --scratch that, the whole movie is rather messy
- Over-the-top acting
- Anachronistic music (this didn't bother me in "A Knight's Tale", funnily enough...)
- Bad musical mash-ups of (generally) good music
Overall thoughts?
I'm going to make ennemies here since this was a big hit amongst girls, but I did not like this movie. At all. And I've tried twice. I just can't do it. I loved Romeo + Juliet, but this here is one big mess. Nicole Kidman's character Satine starts off as a really obnoxious courtisane and it's hard to imagine why a poet would fall in love with her.
Favorite Quote?
"The greatest thing you'll ever learn is just to love and be loved in return."
-Spoken by multiple characters
Date movie?
If you want to impress a girl and indulge her, this is a wildly loved movie in girl-world, so you'd probably earn points (with most girls.)
